In her latest book Newkirk, a journalist, professor of journalism at New York University and author of the award-winning Spectacle and Within the Veil, tracks the efforts of three predominantly white elite industries—Hollywood, corporate America, and academia—to diversify their operations. While these businesses and institutions have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on studies, programs, and training, their efforts have largely been unsuccessful; Google, for instance, invested $265 million on a plan for diversifying the workforce but the initiative left their percentage of Black employees untouched at 2%. In her incisive analysis, Newkirk shows where these programs failed and suggests better ways to achieve the goals.
