as posted by the channelMost of what we today call “mental illness” are actually relational-societal dysfunctions, anomalies, or variances.
So, when I use this vernacular, this vocabulary and I say:
“This person is mentally ill”, I actually mean to say: “This person is a danger to society or otherwise do not conform to the statistical mean or average when it comes to interpersonal relationships and social functioning.”
I am forced to use the phrase “mentally ill” because in my discipline all alternative vocabularies have been roundly rejected (see, for example, the much maligned work by Szasz and Laing).
It is a good question to raise in our next dialog because it is at the core of the gender wars (the pathologizing of masculinity).
