It all begins in schools, where reporting systems flag students for mental health concerns. But here's the catch: evaluations by school counselors are brief and lack context. This leads to rushed diagnoses and inappropriate referrals to higher levels of care.
Emergency room evaluations don't fare much better. They're also brief and lack coordination with other treatment providers. The system's focus on suicide and self-harm can result in overdiagnosis and ineffective interventions.
