“Can Muslims Be Good Americans?”: The Question Nobody Wants To Ask

**Is Islam fundamentally incompatible with Western civilization?**

In this reaction and analysis, I respond to **Jeffrey Boreing** and his argument that Islam cannot truly coexist with the values and institutions of the West.

But before accepting that conclusion, we need to ask a deeper question:

**What exactly do we mean by “the West”—and what exactly does Islam oppose?**

Western civilization is not one thing. It includes Christianity and secularism, religious liberty and colonialism, democracy and empire, individual freedom and moral traditionalism, classical philosophy and modern materialism. Likewise, Islam cannot simply be reduced to the actions of extremists, authoritarian governments, or particular Muslim societies.

In this discussion, we examine the relationship between **Islam, America and Western civilization** from a Qur’anic and historical perspective.

Can Muslims embrace religious liberty, constitutional government, intellectual inquiry, science, economic development and pluralistic societies while remaining faithful to Islam?

Where does Islam genuinely challenge modern Western culture?

And is disagreement with certain Western moral or philosophical assumptions the same thing as being **“anti-Western”?**

We also examine an often-overlooked reality: Muslims have already been part of the Western experience for generations. The history of Islam in America—particularly among African Americans—raises important questions about whether Islam should always be treated as something foreign to Western civilization.

This conversation is not about pretending that Islam and contemporary Western culture have no disagreements. They clearly do.

The real question is whether those disagreements make peaceful coexistence impossible—or whether Muslims can contribute to Western societies while simultaneously challenging some of their assumptions.
