WHY Muslims Belong in America

Why does Islam belong in America?

At a time when anti-Muslim rhetoric and propaganda are once again becoming louder in American public life, this discussion challenges one of the assumptions behind that rhetoric: that Islam is somehow foreign to America, incompatible with American society, or a threat to the nation’s values.

I argue the opposite.

Islam speaks powerfully to some of the ideals America has historically claimed as its own: freedom, justice, equality, human dignity, religious liberty, family, moral responsibility, and accountability before God.

At the same time, America is undergoing a profound religious transformation. Christianity remains the country’s largest religious tradition, but its cultural authority has weakened considerably. Churches have lost influence, religious affiliation has declined, and millions of Americans—particularly younger generations—are searching for moral and spiritual meaning outside traditional institutions.

This creates an important question:

What role might Islam play in the future of America?

Rather than treating Muslims as outsiders, Americans should recognize that Muslims have been part of the American story for centuries—from enslaved African Muslims to African American Muslim movements to immigrant Muslim communities that have become deeply rooted in American society.
