6:11Now PlayingBrian Lilley of TheRebel.Media reports it's dangerous for politicians to play with the employment insurance system if they want to win seats in certain parts of the country, as Chretien's Liberals discovered in 97 when they were virtually wiped out in Atlantic Canada after tinkering with the system.
Stephen Harper has yet to be forgiven, despite apologizing, for his “culture of defeat” comment made well before he became Prime Minister.
We're not supposed to say it but in Atlantic Canada, EI is no longer an employment insurance system but welfare.
Now Justin Trudeau and Tom Mulcair have both promised to make EI easier to get by doing away with sensible reforms. Both made their announcements in New Brunswick. They know if a politician says they love pogey down east they'll be pilloried but if you say you'll make pogey easier to get, you'll be cheered.
Atlantic Canada has lower employment, lower wages, lower economic growth but the answer isn't to keep shoveling more pogey at the people the way Mulcair and Trudeau are promising to do.
But politicians figured out long ago that promising people in Atlantic Canada they'll make the money flow more easily is a sure way to win votes.
There are lots of hard working people from the area spread across the country. We have more jobs across Canada that can’t be filled so we bring in new immigrants to take those jobs yet we still have regions of the country where people are paid to sit idle.
It makes no sense and it is time we stopped it. Politicians need to tell the truth.
