3:57Now PlayingSheila Gunn Reid of TheRebel.Media reports, the war on coal claimed another 220 casualties in Alberta on Tuesday.
Grande Cache Coal is closing and with that 220 people are losing their jobs right before Christmas. This is actually the second round of layoffs this year. In February the mine laid off 175 workers when it suspended surface mining operations. That’s almost 400 people losing their jobs in a town with a population of just a little over 4,000. This is devastating.
But that’s not the whole story. Grande Cache is an oil patch town and this year the rigs are gone. These layoffs add insult to injury.
This was Notley's promise. She promised a move away from coal. She's even surrounded herself with people like Brian Topp who feel the same way.
And what about the coal miner's union? Well, they're understandably mad about the layoffs. Maybe they'll think twice next time before throwing their support behind political parties who are in bed with radical environmentalists.
Or maybe not.
