The Liberals announced they’ll constitute a five person Senate advisory panel but haven’t told us who will be on it yet.
They’ll tell us that later this month but for now, all they’ve said is that those appointed must have a record of achievement and public service, show integrity, understand the role of the Senate and demonstrate an ability to contribute to the work of the Senate in an independent and non-partisan manner.
Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef says the panellists will work with the provinces to find potential senate nominees but at least one province (B.C.) says they aren’t interested in working with this new blue ribbon panel.
And no wonder. Trudeau’s plan of having an appointed panel of eminent Canadians appoint other eminent Canadians to the Senate does nothing to address anyone’s concerns about democratic accountability and if anything, makes it less democratic and less accountable.
We’re told the committee will give the Prime Minister options and he’ll make the final call — but his “options” will be based on the short list provided to him by his unelected political appointees.
Harper tried many different ways to bring real change to the Senate by for instance introducing and pushing for Senate elections, Senate term limits and more but all of those ideas were rejected by the then Liberal dominated senate, fought by the provinces and challenged in courts by activist lawyers.
So Trudeau’s great idea for improvement is to make an unelected, unaccountable and elitist institution even more elitist, even more unaccountable and even more unelected?
This fits Trudeau’s pattern of elitists picking other elitists to rule over us but, is this the change Canada voted for?
