The Bill 6 information session in Leduc was as contentious as all the others.
Bill 6 is the farm unionization bill that masquerades as a farm safety bill, forcing farms and ranches to purchase WCB coverage and adhere to OHS laws for their paid employees.
Farmers know white collar rules don’t work on farms.
Before the information session, a group of farmers drove their tractors through Leduc to the meeting held at the Leduc Recreation Center and had a small gathering outside. PC leader and PC MLA Richard Gotfried showed up to show their opposition to Bill 6.
Minister of Municipal Affairs Danielle Larivee, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Deron Bilous and local NDP MLA Shaye Anderson were on hand to take questions and make excuses.
The Hutterites were there, as always, in full force. In fact, David Tchetter, a Hutterite from Shady Lane Colony at Grande Prairie gave an inspirational speech about his people and unity in the Alberta agricultural community that earned him a standing ovation.
The NDP are offering these farmers nothing when they should be providing clarity. But what can we expect from a party without a single farmer in the caucus?
