8:28Now PlayingThe U.S. Supreme Court unanimously decided this week that the Constitution's prohibition on excessive fines applies to state and local governments. That means that local governments will be limited in how they impose fines and seize property.
The ruling by the High Court might end civil asset forfeiture altogether. The Supreme Court heard a case that involved a man who owned a $42,000 Range Rover. The SUV was bought with money from an inheritance. Law enforcement officials seized the vehicle because the owner was arrested on drug charge. SCOTUS deemed the seizure was unconstitutional.
