9:02Now PlayingOn Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments on the 2020 census citizenship question. The Trump administration wants to add a question on the census asking people if they are U. S. Citizens.
Critics of this move say it will lead to the undercounting of immigrants who are not yet citizens and citizens who are recent immigrants who fear deportation of themselves or their family members.
It appears from the oral arguments on Tuesday, that the 5 conservative members of the court will allow the question. The citizenship question itself originated with known white nationalist and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon. This all part of the Republican strategy to preserve white power in the face of the browning of America.
Kristen Clarke, president & executive director of the National Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law spoke with Roland Martin about the Supreme Court hearing during Tuesday's edition of #RolandMartinUnfiltered.
Here's why the census matters ... the census determines the allocation of over $600 billion federal dollars, which states get more or less seats in the House of Representatives and the electoral college.
Ultimately the addition of the citizenship question is likely to shift more power to more rural, whiter parts of the country.
