One issue that has garnered a considerable amount of attention is Haitian President Jovenel Moïse's move to create a national intelligence agency.
According to the Miami Herald, decrees to create the agency "were published on Nov. 26 in the government’s official newspaper, Le Moniteur."
The Herald also reported since the decrees became public, "they have been the subject of heavy criticism from the PortauPrince Bar Association, human rights defenders and opposition leaders who say they risk creating repression in a country still trying to overcome its dictatorship past." []
Three members of Congress, including Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-NY) have come out against the move to establish the proposed intelligence agency.
In a letter released on Tuesday they wrote, "we are still watching what is unfolding there with growing concern.
The statement continued, "Haitian President Jovenel Moïse is pursuing an increasingly authoritarian course of action, issuing a series of recent decrees that include creating an extra-constitutional domestic “intelligence” force. His latest actions are reminiscent of past anti-democratic abuses the Haitian people have endured, including the run-up to the Duvalier dictatorship. We will not stand idly by while Haiti devolves into chaos."
