House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is warning that the fight over the midterm elections is already underway. Speaking before Black journalists at NABJ, Jeffries says Republicans “have adopted voter suppression as an electoral strategy” and will do everything they can to “try to rig the election in their favor.”

Jeffries points directly to gerrymandering and attacks on Black voting power in Tennessee, Louisiana and Alabama. He says the Supreme Court has aided MAGA extremists by unleashing “Jim Crow like tactics in the south” and argues that Black communities are again being forced to fight to protect their political power.

He says Democrats are preparing what he calls “the largest voter protection effort in the history of the country,” bringing together House and Senate Democrats, Democratic governors, attorneys general, secretaries of state, civil rights groups, organized labor, faith communities and other organizations. Jeffries says the press must expose voter suppression efforts so the public can see what is happening before Election Day.

Jeffries also frames the moment historically. He says America is in a “backlash moment,” drawing a line from Reconstruction and Jim Crow to the backlash after the civil rights movement and the election of Barack Obama. His warning is clear: Black voting power remains a target, and the fight over who controls Congress will also be a fight over who gets to exercise political power.
