Democrat Tiffany Burks is running to unseat Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells, and the Crystal Mason case is at the center of the fight.

Roland Martin blasted Sorrells for continuing to pursue Mason after nine years over a ballot that was never counted. Burks says a high court determined Mason was not guilty and calls the decision to keep appealing the case appalling.

Burks tells Roland that if she is elected Tarrant County DA, her first item of business on day one will be to withdraw the appeal so Crystal Mason can move on with her life.

The race goes far beyond one case. Burks says Tarrant County officials are trying to suppress the vote because they know political change is coming. She also promises a different approach to prosecution, saying district attorneys are supposed to “seek justice, not simply convictions.”

Burks says her administration would create a diversion unit for people dealing with mental health issues, addiction, homelessness, PTSD and low-level offenses. She also pledges to investigate jail deaths and calls out what she describes as selective prosecution in Tarrant County.
