1:25Now PlayingRussell's guest traced that persistent feeling of not being enough back to Psalm 42, the image of a deer panting for streams of water, a longing Carl Jung himself referenced in his correspondence with the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. He argued men are handed a specific image of what a man is supposed to look like, and that even the fiercest, most effective men, if you get them talking honestly, will admit to deep feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness underneath it all. Russell reflected that this deficiency exists because men are never told the actual solution, that real identity is found in God, and without that reconciliation, they end up chasing fulfillment using the culture's own tools and metrics instead, a system he argued isn't just ineffective, it's actually designed to keep people in constant want. Sometimes the problem was never the striving, it was what you were striving toward.
