Hurricane Ida caused many Louisiana hospitals to evacuate their patients during a period of sky-high covid infection and hospitalization rates. Many neighboring states do not have excess capacity in their hospitals and do not have enough nurses and doctors to meet the demand. Sam Seder: The problems in Louisiana in terms of evacuating patients, they had enough time to be aware of the potential of Ida coming but the problem is they didn't have enough time to go far enough to where you could evacuate these patients. Because places like Florida, Texas, surrounding states are being hit so hard with covid right now. That there are simply not either the beds and what they said about the nurses this is the thing that I think people don't fully appreciate in terms of, you know.

Emma Vigeland: The human power behind treating all of these covid patients. I mean the immense exhaustion. But don't worry we clapped outside of our windows, Sam.

SS: Well but the point is like people just think capacity when you hear the shorthand of like there's only so many beds in the ICU. The issue is not literally just the beds, you can get right blow-up mattresses and you can find a gymnasium the problem is that nurses... North Dakota was really playing on that difference they were saying we have these beds available but they weren't actually staffed. Well that's the thing is that and I don't know, I can't tell if people are ignorant about this or willfully ignorant, but it is not just we're a hotel and we can find the beds we're just going to cut back a little bit on the service. There's not going to be any room service tonight. No, that's not what happens in treating people.

Emma Vigeland: No mints on the pillow exactly but like the thing is I also think that people just don't want to think about hospitals until they have to think about them. no one wants to think about the man like the blood and sweat that goes into treating this kind of deadly disease.
