Virginia GOP Gov. Candidate Proves Republicans Don’t Care About Infrastructure Bill

The infrastructure bill, which contains the Biden administration's Build Back Better plan (jobs and support for families), is set for a vote. The bill is bipartisan at this point, but, as usual, is being called a win for Republicans and, according to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a "net negative" for Progressives. The Majority Report crew discuss the infrastructure bill and the upcoming reconciliation bill, and then discuss what the contents of the bill will mean for the 2022 midterms. Then we get a wonderful chance to watch a GOP candidate with a bizarre haircut hold a campaign rally during which he mentions the thing that's most important to GOP voters right now. Infrastructure? Absolutely not. Critical race theory.

Emma Vigeland: He's got his finger on the pulse of his constituents.

SS: Well the point is just what's going on in DC in this like closed bubble they live in.

EV: The point is that he doesn't have the finger on the pulse of his constituents — or his real ones, because his actual ones are the corporations that he serves.

SS: Here's Warner on MSNBC.

Mark Warner: I gotta tell you as somebody who wished we would have gone ahead and voted on the bipartisan infrastructure bill in September, I think we we could have given the president a big win. I gotta tell you, in Virginia, where we've got a gubernatorial race tomorrow that would have really helped uh Terry McAuliffe a lot if we've been able to notch that win.

EV: You know what would have helped the president if you were that concerned about it? Voting through his actual agenda called "Build Back Better" and ensuring that that package was as robust as possible. Not the one that you crafted in concert with the other Republicans that you worked with and was separate from the actual Biden agenda that's how it needs to be framed.

SS: Well it's not... This is so bizarre to me because... He very well may believe this. I don't know if he does or not, but they have certainly sort of made this the conventional wisdom in DC. Remember: 550 billion dollars of new spending — it is bridges and roads, some broadband and energy systems. Now the key to this race in Virginia is going to be essentially how much does the Democratic base come out in Virginia. In other words, how many how people of color and Black people will come out and vote. And when you look at the polling of all Democratic voters in terms of what's most popular, you do not get things like "bridges," you do not get things like roads.

EV: Broadband!

SS: Broadband may be on the list, but things like expansion of Medicare; that's way up there. Things like paid parental leave, paid health leave, that's way up there. So nothing in the bipartisan bill is even remotely close to as popular. But this is the narrative that they are pushing. Meanwhile let's tune in to what Youngkin is running on against Terry McAuliffe.
