Biden In Danger Of Being A Lame Duck President

The Biden administration came out with a head of steam in early 2021. They managed to pass another COVID relief package, but have struggled ever since. They did get a badly needed infrastructure package passed, but Build Back Better is now dead in the water. And the failure of the administration's ability to get anything passed seems to lie at the feet of Joe Manchin. Is Biden already done? Is his presidency effectively over?

Alex: At the beginning of this year Biden was pretty damn popular when they passed that enormous relief act. when things pass and it seems like there's momentum. and it seems like you're getting things done. people I think will tend to reward that more than they will say well look this is so important we're going to spend a year fighting about it and accomplishing nothing. getting no further on it whatsoever.

Sam: And I don't think your average voter actually has access to the information or seeks out the information that gives them the nuance of like 50-50 senate or parliamentary rules or you know the republicans wanted to crash the debt ceiling you know sink the nation's debt. like they don't get that. it's just there is myopia and maybe part of it is because you know Joe Biden's been in government for 50 some odd years. has absolutely no concept of what a person who is outside of government at this point because everybody he comes in contact with is associated with the government on some level. you don't hang out with a senator unless you're really in tune with what's going on in politics. and you don't get to hang out with a senator or vice president unless you also probably think very very highly of your assessment of everything because you have a lot of money. and yeah I think he's like living in a bubble. I mean this is a guy who's like completely they're all I think just tremendously out of touch with never mind the experience of people but just even like the way that people experience government in this case.

Emma: what moves people politically right?

Sam: I mean yeah I am absolutely and it really is. I just think stunning and we so desperately need a leadership that is just starting with younger people. you know people who just haven't been searching for so long.

Emma: with the Hillary Clinton campaign as well. right I mean that's kind of some of the worst fears that we're seeing of how we thought that maybe she might govern this is a lot of what you know is happening in the Biden administration as well.

Sam: I mean yeah I mean I have no I can't imagine we would have seen something radically different from the Clinton people. but it does feel like they saw that loss of momentum and decided oh it's because we passed all these bills really popular with people. and but within the government, they perceived it as being sort of, you know, just radically left-wing I guess. and here's the other thing that you know we seeing with Manchin now. he's saying that he doesn't like the part of the build-back better child tax credit that ostensibly he thinks it's gimmicky because it lasts only until 2025 I guess it is. he's like no it won't run out there it's going to be a permanent feature. Now certainly the people who design it that way are hoping that's what happens. but we're about to see the expiration of the child tax credit. We have seen the expiration of expanded unemployment insurance. We have seen the expiration of the expanded eligibility for Obamacare and free health care you know or paid cobra. We have seen literally billions upon billions of dollars drift away. We've seen the stop on the moratorium of payment of student loan debt. all of these things have gone away and the eviction moratorium went away. like all the proof you need in the world that these things are not permanent just because they're incredibly popular. He's like been laid out in the past six weeks it feels.
