10:12Now PlayingSenator Tommy Tuberville appeared on an Alabama radio show last Thursday and criticized the Biden administration for the U.S. military's lack of readiness in terms of recruitment. He specifically cited the administration's rhetoric surrounding rooting out white nationalists and extremists from the armed forces.
When the host, Richard Banks, asked Tuberville whether he was supportive of white nationalists joining and remaining in the military, he responded, "Well, they call them that. I call them Americans."
Later, NBC News Capitol Hill Correspondent Julie Tsirkin asked Sen. Tuberville to clarify his remarks from last week. When Tsirkin pointed out to Sen. Tuberville that white nationalists do exist in this country, Tuberville interjected to ask her to define the term.
When she asked him how he sees the term "white nationalist," he responded, "I look at a white nationalist as a Trump Republican. That's what we're called all the time. A MAGA person..."
