Black lung disease, formally known as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), is on the rise among coal miners in Central Appalachia. Recent data from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reveals that black lung has become more prevalent and is impacting younger miners and those with less underground experience. The primary cause is excessive exposure to silica dust, which is 20 times more toxic than coal dust. As miners dig through layers of silica-laden rock to reach thin coal seams, the dust enters their lungs, causing irreparable damage. The rise in black lung cases reflects the declining state of the coal industry, reduced union influence, and the geological challenges miners face. Proper dust control measures and stricter enforcement of safety regulations are needed to protect miners from this life-threatening disease.
