3:48Now PlayingThe Texas Legislature has passed Senate Bill 1933, directing significant authority to the secretary of state to oversee election administration in Harris County, Texas, the state's most populous and Democratic-leaning county. This bill, awaiting Governor Greg Abbott's signature, enables the secretary of state to take control of elections in counties with a population of at least four million, a criterion solely met by Harris County. If any election participant files a complaint, even for minor issues, or if the secretary of state believes a "recurring pattern of problems" exists in the county, they can exert extensive oversight over election procedures, including the approval or rejection of election policies beyond the initial complaint, and the removal of election officials. While initially targeting all Texas counties, the bill was amended to single out Harris County, joining a series of measures aimed at this Democratic stronghold, following unfounded claims of targeted Election Day issues in the 2022 midterms.
