Jul 13, 20173:43Now PlayingToday I met my constituent Rick Werner and his family after he gave a moving testimony alongside another parent who had to endure the deep pain of losing his child to an opioid overdose. Rick told me about his son Jamie, who was a proud University of Maryland Terp, special education teacher, and an amazing cook with a kind heart.
I am tremendously grateful for my constituents, like Rick and his family, who selflessly share their stories so that millions of other Americans can have the lifesaving health care they need. The pain associated with losing a child to substance abuse is one that no parent should ever have to endure, and make no mistake—it takes tremendous courage, grit, resolve, and strength to speak out.
At the end of the day, these are the stories that people need to hear as we are fighting the Senate Republicans’ health care bill. I believe, with all of my heart, that these personal stories will save lives and give millions of others the strength they need to continue fighting this immoral bill.
