Dalia Ziada, an Egyptian Muslim writer and political analyst, says she was forced to flee Egypt after speaking out against Hamas and facing threats from the Muslim Brotherhood, Salafists, and others. Now working in Washington, D.C., she is warning that radical Islamist movements do not view Israel as their final target—their larger objective is to weaken the United States and the West from within.
In this reaction, I respond to Dalia’s powerful conversation with Fleur Hassan-Nahoum at the CUFI Summit in Washington, D.C. They discuss the Muslim Brotherhood, political Islamism, campus radicalization, antisemitism, the targeting of Jewish and evangelical Christian communities, and the growing ideological battle over the future of Western civilization.
Dalia also shares her remarkable journey from hiding in Egypt after October 7 to becoming the Washington, D.C. Coordinator and Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy. She now works with researchers and policymakers studying political Islamism, antisemitism, Middle Eastern geopolitics, and threats to liberal democracy.
The conversation also covers the strategic alliance between Israel and the United States, Iran’s future, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Gulf normalization, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Dalia’s argument that Israel has become the strongest power in the Middle East.
I also give my reaction to her arguments about peace through strength, Israel’s strategic importance, the changing balance of power across the Middle East, and why Western leaders must understand the ideology they are confronting.
Do you believe Dalia is right about the Muslim Brotherhood’s long-term strategy? Is the West taking political Islamism seriously enough? Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments.
