Does smoking and stress cause gray or white hair?

Everyone's hair is gray or white before it grows out of your skalp.

Hair is made from two parts, the part we see is we'll call the shaft and the root which is beneath your skin.

Each root is surrounded by a hair follicle and these produce a chemical called melanin which we also talked about

in the video about why leaves changes colors. The melanin is what colours your hair as it grows and before your hair starts graying you got plenty

of these pigment cells.

As you get older these pigment cells gradually start to die and your hair will grow in their natural state, without getting colored by the cells.

the process of going completely gray from when you find your first gray hair can take up to 10-15 years or even longer.

So when will you get gray hair then? The answer is; it depends. Are you a smoker? smokers have a 2.5x higher chance of graying prematurely

according to studies. So if you want to keep your hair color for longer you might want to quit smoking!

Some people gray young, even as young as when they are in their high-school age and some gray when they are older.

It mostly comes down to your genes, most people start graying around the same age asd their parents did.
