2:40Now PlayingThe Ocean water is salty because of a few reasons, when rain passes through our air the rainwater reacts with carbon dioxide and carbonic acid is made, and the rain becomes slightly acidic.
As the acidic rainwater falls onto our rocks on land, small
amounts of ions that taste salty are released from the rock.
The very small newly created ions, minerals and salts get carried along by rivers and other flowing water and eventually ends up in the ocean.
The reason why our rivers and lakes that carry these ions and minerals aswell aren't
salty is because the levels are so small and the lakes and rivers keep being replenished by new freshwater, but once the salt reaches the ocean it can't travel anywhere else and it builds up more salt all the time.
The ocean currently contains around 3.5% salt.
You can't drink ocean or salt water because the levels of salt is too high for your kidneys to be able to dilute so the more salty water you drink the more fresh water your body will need to dilute it.
The more salt water you drink the more dehydrated you will become.
