2:39Now PlayingWhen a Dismissive Avoidant seems completely unaffected after hurting you, it can feel deeply confusing and invalidating. But their reaction isn’t always about a lack of care; it can come from a genuine gap in understanding.
We tend to empathize most naturally with fears and emotional experiences we personally understand. So when someone’s core fears are very different from yours, they may not immediately recognize the impact their behavior is having on you. And if they weren’t taught to openly discuss emotions, consider another person’s perspective, or express empathy growing up, that disconnect can become even stronger.
That doesn’t mean hurtful behavior should be overlooked. The real question is what happens after you communicate how their actions affected you. Are they willing to understand, adjust their behavior, and meet you differently, or does the same painful pattern continue?
Have you ever felt like someone genuinely didn’t understand why their behavior hurt you?
