Well, thanks to the work of the investigative unit of Greenpeace’s Uncovered, we heard lobbyists in their own words explain how they’re trying to tank it. They’re targeting senators who are already friendly to oil and gas, which (SHOCKINGLY) includes many democrats.
This is the type of lobbying that we’re all vaguely familiar with, but hearing these lobbyists in their own words is still something to behold. It’s also a great reminder that without equal and opposite pressure, these Senators have little to lose and lots to gain by staying quiet and doing the bidding of these corporate polluters.
In the full video, these lobbyists also explain how they have been using a carbon tax as a cudgel against any sincere advocates for mitigating or reversing global warming, while understanding that politically it’s a complete non-starter. Basically, they can pretend that they’re interested in doing something about climate change with the full knowledge that their “solution” is total crap and impossible to pass in this congress, or any congress. It’s also worth remembering that Exxon has known for decades that their industry is leading to a full ecological and environmental mass extinction event, but the only thing they’ve done in the meantime is cover their tracks and gaslight anyone who is actually telling the truth.
Sam Seder, host of “The Majority Report”, joins Francesca for the discussion as well as Bassem Youssef, Egyptian comedian who was creator and host of the popular TV show "Al-Bernameg", a political satire which was the first of its kind in the Middle East region.
