As the fires were still burning, House Speaker Mike Johnson put forth his plan to place conditions on disaster aid for California residents suffering from the Los Angeles wildfires. “I think there should probably be conditions on that aid. That’s my personal view, we’ll see what the consensus is,” said Johnson, citing water and resource “mismanagement” and leadership problems as his reasoning.
Right wing talking heads hyped up his plan, citing “woke” and “DEI” leadership in the LA fire department and pointing fingers at the city’s Black female mayor, Karen Bass. Fox News’ Sean Hannity said that California doesn’t “deserve one federal dollar” because of the state’s immigration policies. “L.A. spent more on homeless than firefighters, and both problems are getting worse. They lost $55 billion in Covid money, lost it. They spent $20 billion on a high-speed train that doesn’t go anywhere,” said fellow Fox Newser Jesse Watters.
Clearly, it’s Republicans, not the “woke” who are making California’s fires a partisan issue. But with Donald Trump taking office next week, MAGA just might get their wish to punish the US’s most populous state and leave Angelenos to fend for themselves.
