Hunter Schafer, a trans actress best known for her work in HBO’s Euphoria, took to social media to explain what happened to her when she went to get a new passport. Schafer explained she has had her gender markers listed as female on her driver’s license and passport since she was in high school. So naturally when she went to get a new passport, she assumed that it would also reflect the markers she has been using her entire adult life. But, when her new passport came in the mail, she was shocked to see that they had changed her gender marker to male. This is your tax dollars hard at work!
Hunter acknowledged her privilege in this situation as a pretty, white, passing trans woman in this situation. That being said, making this change to her documentation forces her to out herself to any officials she may have to interact with while traveling. That alone will put her at risk for increased harassment, or worse.
Cruelty is the point here. The Christian nationalists who are running this country want to force trans people out of existence, and actions like this are the first step towards it. And if you are one of these people who thinks that trans issues won’t affect you, think again.
