Utah’s ‘Child Influencer Bill’ Won’t Protect Kids w/ Taylor Lorenz

Utah just passed a child influencer bill to supposedly protect children, but is it really about censorship? Journalist and host of the Power User podcast Taylor Lorenz joined Francesca to explain what is really behind these bills.

Utah is the latest state to pass one of these child influencer safety bills in the U.S. This particular bill came in response to the Ruby Franke case. Franke ran a YouTube channel called 8 Passengers, and was charged with six counts of felony aggravated child abuse that was documented on the channel. On the surface, a bill designed to protect child influencers from abuse seems like a great idea. That is until you actually dig into the content of the legislation.

At the heart of this bill is censorship. The language is purposely vague in a way that would allow for content to be taken down without much cause. For example, if a child happened to appear in the background of a journalistic video about police brutality, that content could be censored based on this bill.

The irony is that if this bill had already been in place, we may have never found out about the abuses Ruby Franke was committing against her children. Tell me how this is about children’s safety?
