World leaders are finally starting to recognize Palestinian statehood, but is this all just performative? Since this episode aired, both Italy and Spain have agreed to send ships to defend the Gaza flotilla which is HUGE.
At the UN General Assembly meeting this week Britain, France, Australia, and Canada joined Ireland, Spain, and Norway in officially recognizing Palestinian statehood. What does this actually mean for ending Israel’s destruction of Gaza and the annexation of the West Bank? Nothing at all. But hey, at least they recognize Palestinians as they are being ethnically cleansed! That being said, Spain and Italy are now sending military vessels to escort the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza which feels like actual progressive.
It wouldn’t be a meeting of the world’s leaders without Trump embarrassing himself, so of course that happened as well. Between getting pissed at escalators and teleprompters that White House staff almost certainly screwed up, Donald scolded the UN leaders. He said, “your countries are going to hell.” Why? Because they don’t have brownshirts brutalizing their immigrants?
