8:19Now PlayingCivil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson passed away at the age of 84. His legacy of fighting for racial equality, LGBTQ rights, and equity for the working class will live on. As we take a look back at his life, it is clear that the Democratic party has always been suppressing leaders like Jackson who fought for the working class.
Before Bernie Sanders had his historic runs for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016 and 2020, Reverend Jesse Jackson had an epic run himself back in 1984 and 1988. He ran on the Rainbow Coalition, a working-class movement specifically designed to fight the Reaganism of the 80’s. Despite the dismissal by the mainstream Democrats and media, this grassroots movement won 13 primaries and caucuses during this run.
The party ultimately chose Mike Dukakis as their nominee. When given the opportunity to add Jackson as his running mate, they opted to go with Lloyd Bentsen from Texas. This man was so conservative, he made George H.W. Bush look like a radical lefty. And guess what? They lost big time to Reagan. It’s almost as if Democrats catering to the right wing never works… And yet, they continue to shun the progressive left of their base today. It’s hard not to think that they lose on purpose.
