22:09Now PlayingDisturbing stories are emerging about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln as the aircraft carrier approaches nine months of deployment.
Families of sailors have raised concerns about exhaustion, food and supply shortages, plumbing and water problems, disrupted mail, deteriorating morale and the mental health of the thousands of sailors and Marines aboard the ship. Some families have also made extremely serious allegations about sailors attempting to go overboard during the extended deployment.
The Navy has pushed back on some of the reporting, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says conditions aboard the carrier have been misrepresented. But after more than 200 consecutive days without a port call, questions are growing about how long the men and women aboard the Lincoln can reasonably be expected to continue operating under these conditions.
Now another aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington, is heading west as the Lincoln finally moves closer to being relieved.
In today's video, we're going through the reports coming from sailors and their families, the Navy's response, the extraordinary length of this deployment and what all of this says about the human cost being paid by the people actually carrying out America's military policy.
Whatever your politics or your opinion about America's wars, the sailors aboard these ships are human beings. They need food. They need clean water. They need sleep. They need functioning facilities. And eventually, they need to come home.
