32:45Now PlayingPresident Trump is expected to sign the Laken Riley Act into law Wednesday afternoon, marking his first move on legislation since returning to office last week.
The immigration-focused legislation — which he and Republicans made a priority while on the campaign trail — will require the detention of migrants that lack legal status, including those seeking asylum in the U.S., if they have been accused of theft, burglary or shoplifting. It was named after Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was killed by a Venezuelan migrant previously arrested for shoplifting after he was paroled into the country.
Trump's signature comes after he issued a bevy of executive orders during his first week in office, including broad moves on his immigration agenda.
The signing ceremony is expected to begin at 2 p.m. EST.
