While this is legal to do this, it is often unethical. This often leads to the police forces prioritizing profit over actual police protection and enforcement. Civil asset forfeitures lead to an ongoing cycle of police profiting, and property owners receive very little protections. Police enforcement and their budgets are addicted to the revenue they bring in from these forfeitures.
