In this video, I walk through the story of Bruna Ferreira: brought from Brazil to the U.S. as a child, formerly protected by DACA, now arrested by ICE in Massachusetts and shipped off to a detention center in Louisiana. Her U.S.-citizen son lives in New Hampshire with his father, Michael Leavitt—Karoline’s brother—who reportedly told Bruna to “self-deport” and try to come back the “right” way, instead of fighting to keep his own child’s mother in the country.
ICE is now treating a long-ago overstayed visa as a justification to tear this family apart, and they’re pointing to a past “battery” arrest that her lawyers say was dismissed. Meanwhile, Karoline has stayed publicly silent about her nephew’s mom being locked up, all while she goes on TV to sell the same deportation machine that’s ripping through her own extended family. This isn’t some glitch in the system or a tragic exception—this is the system working exactly as designed, doing what Trump and his allies promised it would do.
When you build a system that treats undocumented people as disposable and supercharges ICE’s power, it doesn’t stay neatly trained on “those people.” It expands, escalates, and eventually hits people who thought their connections, whiteness, or proximity to power would keep them safe. They wanted a government powerful enough to do this to immigrants. Now they’re watching that same power grab the mother of a Trump official’s nephew.
