Hochul labels Texas GOP redistricting a 'legal insurrection' in new op-ed

“I will not sit on the sidelines with timid souls and merely watch while Republicans dismantle democracy,” – wrote Governor Kathy Hochul in an op-ed published Tuesday in the Houston Chronicle.

The op-ed was published a day after she welcomed a group of Texas Democrats who fled their state in a move to block a redistricting vote, signally formal support for constitutional amendment that would allow mid-cycle redistricting in New York State, if other states, like Texas, do it first.

“This isn’t just a Texas issue. When Republicans rig congressional maps in one state, it weakens representation in every state. Every unfair seat they create tilts Congress further out of balance. If they get away with it now, 2026 will be the first of many stolen elections,” she wrote.
