Trump denies threatening 100% tariffs on countries that buy Russian energy

During an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on July 14, Trump said if Russian President Vladimir Putin didn't agree to a peace deal within 50 days, he would impose "secondary tariffs" on countries that buy its energy products, which have been a major source of income enabling the Kremlin to sustain its war through what were meant to be obstructive tariffs from the U.S. and its allies over the past three and a half years.

“I'm disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn't seem to get there. So based on that, we're going to be doing secondary tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days. It's very simple and they'll be at 100%," Trump said in the meeting.

About two weeks later, after a slew of deadly Russian assaults across Ukraine, Trump shortened the deadline to this Friday.
