Since then Ece Temelkuran has continued her criticism of Erdoğan and his government in Turkey and today she joins Megan Gibson to discuss Turkey’s slide into authoritarianism – and the lessons the political situation holds for other democracies – as well as the country’s spiralling economic and democratic crisis and what chance a united opposition might have to defeat the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“When right-wing populism comes to town, it creates this extreme polarisation not only in [the] political but also in everyday life as well,” says the author Ece Temelkuran. “Turkey has been through that, and the very fabric of society has been damaged.”
As one of Turkey’s most prominent journalists, Temelkuran has been tracking the authoritarian rise of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development party (AKP) since he first came to power in 2002. As the president has tightened his hold on power, press freedoms in the country have been steadily eroded.
