Why Secular Talk Has Gone Downhill....

The famous progressive political show Secular Talk has reached the amazing milestone of 1 million subscribers! Big congratulations to Kyle Kulinski for reaching this milestone, but this likely pales in comparison to his other many accomplishments, such as founding Justice Democrats, which allowed AOC to be what she is today.

Despite his recent resurgence in channel size growth, there has been a lot of dissent amongst his fans who have spoken about how his quality has gone downhill. After watching some of his recent videos lately, I think I have really figured out why.

1) He is overworked.

His supply lines are far overstretched between Secular Talk & Krystal Kyle & Friends. I believe KKF is filmed in DC, while his studio for ST is back home in NY. This makes it difficult for him to manage both shows, and he also had taken on a lot of responsibilities previously with Justice Democrats. This leads to recording videos while lying in his bed (super unprofessional), and using a blue yeti microphone at 1 million subscribers. It comes off as lazy, and so does his analysis. But it's not because he's lazy, in fact it's quite the opposite, he works too hard. He can't focus as much on Secular Talk, because he is overworked.

2) He is more industry now.

Kyle Kulinski used to be the rebel, the commentator from his studio calling out anyone and everyone who deserved it. Now he's best buddies with Joe Rogaine, leading to him defending him and not criticizing him when he deserves it. It really hurts his image. Not only that, but now he's at Marianne Williamson's presidential campaign launch with Krystal. This is clearly a move towards being more of an insider than an outsider like he used to be, which again, takes away from his brand and product.

3) His analysis is simply very basic and surface level.

His analysis just doesn't run that deep, which means his content is very good for introductory political commentary viewers, but after watching him for a while, your consumption should move over to something like The Majority Report or the Humanist Report, a more substantive show. To be sure, you'll lose some entertainment value, but that's the unfortunate trade-off you have to make.

4) He doesn't meet the emotional needs of his core audience.

Every creator needs their core audience, the base that is a consistent viewer of their channel, the channel can only survive with them, because without them they won't be able to reach a bigger audience in the first place.

Typically content creators will read their comments, respond to comments/tweets, do livestreams, etc. He used to do some of these, like doing Q&A's, doing livestreams, etc. But he completely stopped all of it. This leads to dissatisfaction amongst your core audience, so your defenders all turn into offenders against you.

It's cool to watch Secular Talk, and big congratulations to Kyle for reaching the milestone, this is a huge deal for him and all of progressive media, but it's undeniable that his content quality has gone downhill.
