The K-T boundary event that ended the dinosaurs represents the upper limit of planetary catastrophe - and by definition, Randall notes, nothing of that magnitude has struck within the human timeline, because we are still here. However, the more significant observation is what exists below that threshold. Within the range of catastrophes that would not trigger a globally detectable mass extinction, there are events severe enough to cause regional or local extinctions - and more critically, severe enough to erase an advanced civilization entirely without eliminating the human species that built it.

That distinction is the core of Randall’s argument. Civilizational extinction and species extinction are not the same event, and they don't require the same scale of catastrophe. A sufficiently powerful but sub-extinction level impact could eliminate every physical trace of an advanced society - its infrastructure, its knowledge systems, its population centers - while leaving enough scattered survivors to eventually rebuild from nothing. Randall’s point is that these mid-range catastrophes are not rare outliers. They are, by the logic of frequency and scale, far more common than the civilization-ending events we have tended to focus on - and their relative invisibility in the geological record is precisely what has allowed their role in human prehistory to go underexamined for so long.
