Fire Destroys the Coasts. Floods Destroy the Valleys. Plato Knew Both.

Two hundred thousand years of human history - conservatively - means two hundred thousand years of exposure to the periodic global catastrophes Randall has been documenting throughout his research. What ultimately determines whether civilization survives those events comes down, he argues, to resilience and adaptability. That is not a modern observation. Plato addressed it explicitly in Timaeus, describing a periodicity of catastrophes and laying out with surprising specificity who was likely to survive each type.

The framework Plato presents is geographical. In catastrophes driven by fire, those living near the ocean have the greatest chance of survival. In destructions by flood, those in the mountains are most likely to endure. Randall’s point is that Plato was not spinning mythology in Timaeus. He was encoding a pattern - one derived from a knowledge tradition that understood catastrophic cycles well enough to categorize them by type and predict their differential survival outcomes. That level of analytical precision about events most modern institutions still treat as myth or legend is, Randall argues, exactly the kind of detail that reveals just how much was known by the ancient world - and how deliberately that knowledge was preserved for the generations that would eventually need it.
