The Barcelona Institute for Global Health has produced findings that Randall finds striking in their clarity. A strong correlation exists between low exposure to nature during childhood and higher levels of nervousness and depression in adulthood - and the relationship is not merely statistical. Exposure to green space during childhood can structurally change white and gray matter volume in the developing brain, suggesting a direct causal relationship between contact with the natural world and cognitive and emotional development. Nature is not simply pleasant. It is neurologically formative.

What the research Randall presents confirms is that the childhood experience of green space is a meaningful predictor of mental health later in life - reducing rumination, increasing self-esteem, improving quality of life, and supporting physical activity in ways that compound over time. The brain scans showing structural changes in children regularly exposed to nature make the mechanism visible in a way that correlational data alone cannot. Randall’s broader framework gives this finding additional resonance - ancient traditions that organized their sacred sites, their healing practices, and their understanding of human development around the natural world were not operating on instinct alone. The modern neuroscience, he suggests, is catching up to what those traditions encoded long ago.
