Republicans Want To Steal The Midterms By Gerrymandering Even More Districts

Republican politicians and leaders have been talking for quite some time now about how best to take advantage of census data in order to gain more seats in Congress. One of the ideas that keeps popping up is the idea of "cracking" cities, which means splitting red cities into two districts in order to gain an extra, safe Republican seat in Congress. But they are slightly hesitant to do this, and Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains why one wrong move could ruin all of their plans.

According to a new report from Politico, Republicans, both in Washington, DC and Republican leaders from the states and the DC Republicans does include House, Senate minority leader, excuse me, Mitch McConnell. But anyway, they're, they're having discussions on how best to use the census data that's coming in to gerrymander their states in order to essentially steal the 2022 midterm elections. That's what's happening. That's the discussion the Republicans are having. And one of the ideas that they have, something they have actually discussed is, is actually what they're calling cracking cities. What that means is when you have a heavily populated Republican city, okay. Usually big cities, they actually tend to lean left. That's where your, you know, commerce happens. That's where you have more and I don't mean this in an offensive way, but it is, you do typically have more college educated people.

But anyway, when you have a big Republican city, they're now looking at this in places like Kentucky, places like Missouri, and they're saying, well, what if we crack the city, you know, what if we just split it right down the middle and essentially create two congressional districts where in the past only one had existed. That way we end up with two safe Republican seats and then of course we win the midterms from there. Yay. We're so smart. We're the best Republicans ever. Well, listen, gerrymandering is something Republicans do rely on to win elections, but it's also one of the trickier things, because one of the things that people like Mitch McConnell's warning the rest of his Republican party, even though again, McConnell, wholeheartedly supports this, but they're telling them be wary. You can't just go redrawing your district lines, all willy nilly and say, oh, we created five new Republican districts. Oh, wow. Amazing.

Because if you mess up, you do something a little bit wrong, you do something a little bit questionable and then we get sued, then we lose the ability to redraw those lines at all. It then becomes a matter for the courts and in many cases, the courts will have to redraw the lines themselves. So that is the only, I guess, you'd call it safeguard that we have right now to preserve the integrity of the 2022 midterms, is Republicans are afraid that if they abuse their power too much, then they're going to lose it. And the courts are going to have the power to redraw those district lines. So that's what we're, what we're dealing with now. Republicans absolutely want to abuse the power. They're just trying to figure out the right amount of power to abuse so they don't end up losing it. That's what's happening in the United States today ahead of the 2022 midterms.

So yeah, totally healthy system we have here, right? This, this is insane. This is election rigging. Republicans are openly talking about this because they know they're probably not going to get in any trouble. This is ridiculous. And unfortunately, all we can do is sit here talk about it and make sure people are aware of it and hopefully put enough pressure on them to, you know, sue, when the Republicans do this. Because we're not going to be able to stop the Republicans from doing it.
