Alabama GOP Chair May Be Impeached For Trump Rally Fundraising Scheme

The chair of the Alabama state Republican Party is facing calls for his impeachment over a scheme to raise money to get Trump to hold a rally for embattled Republican Mo Brooks. Brooks is currently facing a stiff primary challenge, and is behind in the polls, but the state Chair believes a rally with Trump could save Brooks' career. Republicans in the state of Alabama are not happy with their state party chair, a man by the name of John Wahl, who has apparently decided to break the Alabama state Republican party rules to endorse and actually outright support a candidate over their primary challenger. That candidate just happens to be Mo Brooks and the endorsement of him is really his promise to give $300,000 to Donald Trump's super PAC if Donald Trump is willing to come to Alabama, which so far he is, to do a rally to support Mo Brooks. Now there is a lot of moving parts to this story. So let me break it down as best I can. Mo Brooks Republican Congressman from the state of Alabama, obviously kind of universally hated throughout the United States. He's a bit of a gas bag, a bit of a conspiracy nut and it turns out that even in Alabama, they're not huge fans of him.

So he has a Republican primary challenger who is currently polling ahead of him doing better than Mo Brooks. So Mo Brooks is at a very severe risk of losing his seat. So you have John Wahl, chair of the Alabama Republican party, who reached out to Donald Trump said, listen, I'll give you from our state funds $300,000 to your Save America PAC, come do a rally, get support for Mo Brooks so he can win this primary and go on to win the election. And again, the Alabama state Republican party has very strict rules. They have to remain neutral in Republican primaries, right? They kind of take a step back and say, listen, may the best Republican win, but that is not what Wahl did here. And he's actively raising money, sending out text messages to donors, begging them to give money so that he can then give it to Trump.

And he's telling them in the text messages, here, I'll just, I'll just read it here. Promising them special access to the Trump rally if they contribute to Mo Brooks' campaign, including better parking, air conditioned tents and photos with Mo Brooks himself. All you have to do, give money to Mo Brooks, give money so we can give it so Trump can come in. Come to the rally and you're going to get an air conditioned tent, folks, which honestly not that bad of a deal if you're planning on going to the Trump rally, considering how they're likely holding it in a cow pasture based on the address that they gave out in the middle of a heat wave throughout the South. So yeah, probably not the best place to hold an outdoor rally, especially when you're talking about Summer down here in the South, that gets pretty brutal.

But now other officials within the Republican party apparatus in the state of Alabama are calling for Wahl to be impeached for not being able to be impartial with the Mo Brooks primary. So this guy could actually lose his job all because of this little, you know, fundraising scheme here to help Mo Brooks get reelected. And honestly, it is a bit weird. Like why stick your neck out? Why risk impeachment from your own party just to get Mo Brooks elected over a different Republican? This is a safe district. We're not talking about, oh God, they're going to lose to the Democrats. That's not even a possibility. You're going to get a Republican either way. So you would have won either way.

But you stuck your neck out.
