Matt Gaetz put up the biggest fight to prevent Kevin McCarthy from becoming the Speaker of the House, effectively flexing what little power he had. And the Republicans in the House proved to him that he's got absolutely nothing. More Republicans are rallying around McCarthy, further showing that Gaetz has no real power, much like his idol Donald Trump. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this.

Matt Gaetz launched his crusade to make sure that Kevin McCarthy does not get to become the Republican speaker of the House in January. Shortly after the dust settled on the midterms and we found out Republicans were in fact going to have the majority, and immediately Matt Gae went to work. He gathered up a couple other Republicans. He's only got five of 'em, including himself, but he made it clear that he is absolutely under no circumstances, gonna allow Kevin McCarthy to take over that Republican party. Now, it was never exactly clear why Matt Gates launched this little crusade, but he was flexing his muscle. He was shown, I'm Matt Gaetz and I've got power, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna show you all that I'm the big bad man, and oh, well, it turns out that Matt Gae not only flexed his muscle, but he also got his kicked because as it stands right now, Kevin McCarthy is pretty much guaranteed to be the next Republican speaker of the house unless something totally wacky happens in the next week and a half.
Here's what's going on right now. You have the moderate, I guess, more centrist members of the Republican Party in the house. They're actually walking around the capitol with buttons that say, okay, and that's a weird thing to do, I admit. But the Okay stands for only Kevin, only Kevin, Kevin McCarthy is the only person that these individuals are willing to vote for for Speaker of the House. Basically, those okay, buttons they're walking around with should instead be a giant middle finger to Matt Gates. Gates came into office in 2016. That was his first election, same time Donald Trump did. So he wins in 20 16, 20 18, 20 20, and now 2022. He's been there for six years. He's about to have two more, but he's still relatively young and new in Congress. When you consider the fact you got some folks that have won more than 10 elections that are still there on the Republican side, as well as plenty on the Democratic side.
But Matt Gates from day one tried to flex his muscle. He always wanted to be the big bad guy, the popular guy, the guy on TV all the time. And when he finally gets the opportunity to flex that muscle to show that power that he thinks he has, he gets smacked down by the rest of the chamber. Oh, sure. He's got his four little friends with him that say, oh, we're not gonna vote for McCarthy either. Mad. But then you got, you know what, 213 Republicans on the other side, so it's Matt Gates and his four friends versus over 200 other Republicans. And Gates actually thought he could win that fight.
He thought he had that kind of power, and they are all showing him that you got nothing, kid, you are powerless. What's even more interesting is that Republicans have apparently been talking about booting these anti McCarthy Republicans, like Matt Gates booting them off their committees. So not only does Matt Gates not have the power that he thinks he has, but if he continues this little crusade, what little power he does have might be stripped away from him on January 3rd when the new Congress comes in because of his fight against McCarthy, Matt Gates, you picked a fight with an opponent that you had no chance of winning, and it could cost you everything.
