Republicans Introduce Legislation To Let Them Continue Harassing Alvin Bragg

Republicans in the House of Representatives have introduced legislation that is nothing more than a trojan horse to allow them to continue harassing Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg. The legislation, specifically, would strip state and local prosecutors of their ability to prosecute "former presidents", and instead moves jurisdiction to federal law enforcement agencies. But this is just a means to legitimize the harassment that Republicans are throwing at Alvin Bragg, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

Those sneaky Republican bastards in Washington DC have come up with a way to continue to harass Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg. And they're doing it with a new piece of legislation put forward by South Carolina Republican, uh, Russell Fry and Mr. Fry's legislation would actually move any prosecution, any investigation of a former president of the United States, any of 'em, right? I mean it's not specific to just one. It could be any of 'em moves it from the state, local level to the federal level, meaning state prosecutors, local prosecutors would no longer be able to even investigate a former president. It would immediately have to be moved to the federal level where we have a federal court system that is packed with judges put there by Republicans, but that's the face of it. What's really going on is that Republicans in the house want to continue to harass Alvin Bragg in New York City, but they know that they can't subpoena him to come down and talk to them because they have no jurisdiction over him.

He doesn't receive federal money. He is not a federal employee. There is nothing they can do to touch him. And of course they're not considering any legislation that would actually impact Bragg's job. So he wouldn't have to comply with a subpoena if they hit him with one. But wait, now they are considering legislation that would impact Bragg's job, which would mean based on previous court rulings, they can now subpoena Alvin Bragg and force 'em to come to Congress. That's what this is all about. That's what this is. They know they can't pass the legislation cuz it'll never make it through the Senate. Hell, it probably won't even make it through the house. But as long as the legislation is pending, as long as it has been proposed and written, then if they subpoena Alvin Bragg and he goes to court trying to challenge the subpoena saying they have no grounds to do it, these Republicans then get to go to court and say, Hey, we've got legislation we're considering. And Alvin Bragg is the kind of guy that knows about what we're doing. You know, because he is prosecuting a former president. We've got former President prosecution legislation, so therefore our subpoena is legitimate. And he should have to come in. And as I said, there is legal precedent for this. What goes around comes around unfortunately. And the Democrats in Congress who spent many, many years trying to get their hands on Donald Trump's tax returns, they did the same thing. Basically

Republicans, I mean Trump of course had argued repeatedly over the years in court that those Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, the Ways and Means committee, all the other committees seeking the tax returns, they couldn't have 'em because they wasn't related to any legislation they were drafting. So Democrats got clever and they said, aha, but hold up, we actually have legislation that would uh, you know, change the rules for auditing presidents with the irs, therefore we need his tax returns. And the court said, you know what? You got a valid legislative reason. So we are gonna say Trump has to comply with the subpoena and turn over the documents to say the same thing here. It sucks. But that's what it is. That's why they're doing it. Because if they can have this legislation still existing, still pending, then they believe they then have the legal clearance.
