The Health and Human Service Office of the Inspector General Spring 2025 semi-annual report was issued recently covering activities from October 1st, 2024 to March 31st, 2025. According to the report, the Office of the Inspector General returns $11 in recovery for every $1 invested, accounting for a $16.61 billion total monetary impact. In that same six months 1,503 individuals and entities were excluded from federally funded healthcare programs for a variety of reasons, including conviction for Medicaid or Medicare fraud. They have led to 298 criminal information indictments as well as 395 civil actions. When Inspector General reports may not sound exciting, the results speak for themselves. Canchola 54 of Texas was sentenced to 10 years in prison, as well as ordered to pay $34 million in restitution for his role in a scheme to defraud Medicare by prescribing durable medical equipment and cancer genetic testing without seeing, speaking to, or otherwise treating patients. In addition to these examples, OIG administers grants that provide federal funding to Medicaid fraud control units to fight Medicaid fraud and protect nursing home patients from abuse. In the fiscal year 2024 MFCU work resulted in 1,151 convictions and $1.4 billion in recovered assets. Despite their success, the agency is under attack. The Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services was fired early in the Trump presidency. As of this report, there's only an acting Inspector General.
