9:43Now PlayingSpeaking to Matt Chorley, Bishop of Dover Rose Hudson-Wilkin told Times Radio that the government needs to show compassion towards refugees coming from Ukraine after Russia invaded the country.
She said: "I'm ashamed at that response in relation to picking fruits.
"People are running for their lives, bombs are raining down on them. And I think what we need is compassion more than anything else."
She's calling for the government to open safe and accessible routes for people fleeing the Ukrainian war to reach sanctuary.
She said: "Stop the constant thing about punishing refugees, people who have enjoyed much, and you're saying, they've tried their best, they've arrived on our borders, and we're going to put them in prison?
"This is inhumane and incompassionate.
"We cannot do that. We cannot truly, I feel ashamed to be part of a country where our leaders are even suggesting that."
More than 500,000 people have fled Ukraine, the UN’s refugee agency has said. On Sunday, Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear deterrent forces on alert.
