Samet Atasoy, a writer from Ankara, is not surprised by Erdogan's behavior. Samet says it is consistent with Erdogan's stubborn, arrogant insistence that the protests are insignificant and composed primarily of drunks and bums. Now that he is abroad, Erdogan's deputies, like Bulent Arinc, have begun apologizing for police brutality and meeting with protesters. Is this a fatal hubristic mistake by Erdogan--or the right approach to save face and secure his legacy?
